The Great Mouse Hunt of 2012

So remember that time I found my cat playing with a mouse in my room?  Yeah, me too.  Well, I had just finally started to recover and sleep soundly in my bedroom almost two weeks later, and it happened again.  Except this time it was worse.  Here’s where I wish I was skilled in the art of MS Paint, because illustrations would be much more hilarious, but I’ll do my best to explain in writing.

It was about 11:30 pm and I was laying in bed reading, when in strolls Pumpkin all proud of herself with a MF mouse in her MOUTH.  Why she felt the need to bring it upstairs to me, I do not know, but then SHE LET IT GO!  I have never seen something move so quickly in my life.  That damn mouse bolted behind my suitcase that was leaning against the wall, where it stayed while Pumpkin tried to get at it.  At this point I am standing on the middle of my bed, freaking the eff out, trying to figure out what to do.  The mouse must have seen an opening, because all of a sudden it was scurrying across my bedroom floor in the direction of my closet, while Pumpkin was still sniffing around the suitcase.

I tried to move some things around in the closet to see if I could find the mouse, but it’s packed pretty full in there and I was not moving from my perch in the center of the bed. I took some of the larger suitcases out, banged around a bit, hoping to scare it out of its hiding place, and then had a complete and utter meltdown.  I just started sobbing.  I called Darren, who was no help at all, and just told me to find it and kill it or shut up about it.  In between heaves I just kept repeating, “I can’t find ittttt.”  He kept saying something about me being a grown woman and to just handle it, but I couldn’t really hear him through my sobs. Then he hung up on me and went to bed.

I knew I’d never be able to sleep in my room that night, not with mouse hunt 2012 taking place, so I crawled into my roommates bed with her.  She was sound asleep, and initially very confused, but more than willing to give me refuge.  Throughout the night I could still hear Pumpkin stalking and chasing the mouse, so I just hoped the situation would be taken care of when I woke up (not that I really slept well at all).

I went into my room this morning and saw no mouse body, or evidence of a mouse murder, but Pumpkin was also nowhere to be seen.  I slowly made my way downstairs, where I saw her laying on the living room floor, staring at the couch.  When she saw me, she got up and moved towards the couch and started meowing at it, and trying to get at something under it.  I moved the couch back, and there it was, a dead mouse.  I’m choosing to believe that dead mouse, is the same mouse that was living in my closet hours earlier.  The alternative is too horrifying to imagine.

So,  yup, we have mice.  My guess would be they live under our stove or kitchen sink somewhere, because I’ll often catch Pumpkin sitting in the dark kitchen staring intently in that direction.  I will be buying traps this afternoon and placing them throughout the house.  Anyone have recommendations of good ones?  I refuse to use those snappy ones that sometimes do not kill the mouse, just injure it.  So terrible.  I’m probably traumatized for life.  I have no problems with Pumpkin hunting down the mice in the house, but can’t she keep them downstairs?  I don’t need to see what she’s caught.

Spoiled Rotten

I made it to lunch time spin class yesterday, and it felt great! Ok, it actually felt horrible, but the good horrible.  My legs and lungs were burning (lungs was probably a combo of being out of cardio shape and the crap residing in my bronchial tubes) and the 45 minute sweat fest was just what I needed.  However, after almost a year without a spin class in my life, certain lady parts are feeling it today. Wah.

The rest of the work day was rather uneventful and I managed to convince myself to hit the grocery store at the end of the day so I could stop spending $10 on cafeteria lunches.  The grocery store at 5:30 on weeknights always has the potential to send me into a murderous rage, but people must have been home drinking away their Tuesday sorrows because it was surprisingly empty.  I stocked up on meal supplies for the rest of the week, and even managed to avoid buying any wine!  I’m trying to hop back on the “no drinking during the week” bandwagon. It’s really difficult when the alcohol is sold in your grocery store.

When I finally got home I was greeted with two giant packages sitting on my front porch, unfortunately neither were for me.  Pumpkin however, did get a special delivery.  She’s on the verge of becoming one of the world’s most spoiled pets.  A $50 drinking fountain with filtered water?  You better like it, cat.

Oh, she also was upgraded to Fancy Feast food, and at $.75 a can she better enjoy it.  Oh the things we do for our animals.  Dinner for me last night was one of my favorites, and surprisingly something I don’t think I’ve made since living in VA.  Actually, I’m pretty positive I haven’t made it because I did not have a bottle of Marsala cooking wine in my pantry.  Chicken Marsala with a side of Broccoli Au Gratin Rice.  That shit is good, cheesy broccoli rice, yum.  Then I went to bed at 9:50 because I am sick, and tired, and old.

Happy Wednesday kids, today was deadline on our house offer so we should hear something back!  The listing agent told our agent we were the only offer (probably because they are messy slobs) so hopefully they are willing to negotiate their price (which was absurd anyway) and work with us! Later gators!

No Good, Horrible, Very Bad Day

My vet called to let me know that Pumpkin’s blood work came back and things were not good.

She’s not in kidney failure yet, but it’s close, and we really need to do a lot to turn things around.  Pumpkin gets to go on a special kidney diet food, and I need to figure out how to get her to drink more water.  A suggestion was to mix tuna juice with water, and freeze it in cubes to give her.  I shed a few tears at my desk yesterday afternoon and then just couldn’t wait to get out of there.  We just got back from another trip to the vet where she had a urine sample taken, and the results of that will give us more of an indication of how bad her condition is.

Days like yesterday only help to point out how sucky it is to be in a LDR.  All I wanted at the end of the day was to be able to come home and stumble into a hug and be able to sob openly, but that’s not possible when your love lives 13 hours away.  Instead I settled for meeting my roommates out for half price burgers and $2 beers, and it helped to cheer me up some.

I’m working from home today so that I could take Pumpkin to the vet again, and so far she seems to like the special food.  She ate more of it than anything else I’ve tried to give her lately so I guess that’s good.  She’s only 8, and still so playful, I hope we can figure out how to get her better so she can be around for many more years.  She’s my baby!

boo boo!

Can You Tie Your Shoes?

So for such a small creature, my cat can be extremely annoying.  She’s super clingy and needy, and loves to rub her furry self all over my black dress pants while I’m making my lunch in the morning.  Also, if she feels like you aren’t paying enough attention to her she will sit and meow at you until you do.  I don’t really know what was wrong with her the other night, but she wouldn’t shut up or leave me alone so I decided to bribe her with a can of soft food.  Pumpkin normally only gets the hard stuff.  Well, have you ever seen a cat who is not used to getting soft food eat it?  I swear it was like crack for her.  She did not make a sound for a good 10 minutes while she ate, and then she proceeded to lounge on the floor sleeping for the rest of the night.  I’m pretty sure she ate herself into a coma.  She looked something like this:

Even yesterday when I came home from work, she didn’t get off the couch and follow me around like she normally does.  She merely lifted her head up, looked at me, and put it down to go back to sleep.  Although, I think I’ve created a monster because now she won’t eat the hard food and just keeps meowing at me.  Little shit.

Anyway, last night I did my 4 mile easy run at a 10 minute pace, followed by some abs and push-ups.  I’m happy to see the push-ups seem to be getting easier, might be time to up the number in each set.  Still had some stomach issues, I’m blaming the coffee I’ve been drinking in the mornings but hopefully I have no problems tomorrow for my long run.

Ok, so I know you all think you learned how to tie your shoes in kindergarten but did you know you’ve probably been doing it wrong?  I came across this video on Runners World yesterday and found it pretty interesting.  Go ahead, check it out, are you tying your shoes the right way?  I’m not, and I still can’t figure out the correct way, haha.  Every way I tried, my laces still pointed the wrong way.  I see this occupying me until I get it right.

We have our company picnic today at noon, so I pretty much only have a half day which is fantastic.  Then I’m hitting the road to VA, this drive always inspires my worst bouts of road rage because of traffic.  Dani and Adrienne, wine when I get there?  What is everyone else up to this weekend?

21 Day Cardio Body and Yoga Meltdown

Last night I utilized Exercise TV again, and did two workout videos.  I did the Brooklyn Decker Cardio Body workout, and then decided to check out Jillian’s Yoga Meltdown.  I’ve heard so much about it and how intense it is and I wanted to see for myself.  Here’s Pumpkin all ready to workout with me.

Doing two videos in a row might have been a little ambitious, because holy crap was I exhausted by the end.  My sister paused the TV during Jillian at one point and laughed, and was like you know you’re only half way done?  I thought for sure my arms were going to fall off of my body.  I kept waiting for her to tell us to push back into Child’s Pose, but I should have known there is no resting with Jillian.  I loved it though, and am now considering purchasing the actual DVD and will revisit level one through exercise TV as soon as I can move my triceps again.  Pumpkin gave up half way through, and went right to the bathing process.

For some reason, after a strenuous workout (especially when I know my muscles will be screaming the next day) I want nothing more than a giant glass of red wine.  Ok well I most always want a giant glass of red wine, but I’m convinced it keeps me from getting as sore also.  I schlepped across the street to the liquor/grocery store, picked up a bottle of Malbec, and some tortelloni.  Our off button for the oven currently isn’t working, so uh using it isn’t an option.

I used my toaster oven to roast some asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper and put that on the bottom of my plate.

Then I added the pasta, sauce, and a sprinkle of shredded Mozzarella.

It was good, and the addition of the asparagus made it a much more filling meal.  The sauce was a little bland for my taste, so I think when I use it again I’ll add some more seasoning to it.  Overall a quick, delicious, and healthy meal.

Tonight is hopefully my very last PT appointment.  I’ve realized I’m so nervous about working out though and am afraid to push myself because of my leg.  I still just keep expecting it to hurt, I wonder how long it will take before I trust my body again?

Have a great Thursday everyone, it’s almost the weekend!  Or if you’re my two jerky friends, today is your Friday.
